The 6th edition of enlightED consolidates itself as the main world forum on educational innovation

enlightED 2023, the world conference bringing together innovation, education and technology, led by the Fundación Telefónica, IE University, South Summit and Fundación ”La Caixa”, was held on 18 and 19 October at Espacio Fundación Telefónica. With 2,500 attendees, this edition cast the spotlight on rethinking teaching in the age of artificial intelligence.

Under the slogan Rethinking education in the age of artificial intelligence, enlightED 2023 addressed the challenges, opportunities and solutions posed by generative AI, its use and its applications for teachers and students. Other issues included respect for diversity, regulation and ethical boundaries and the impact on the future of employment. 

The closing ceremony was attended by Pilar Alegría, acting Minister of Education and Vocational Training, José Luis Martínez Almeida, Mayor of Madrid, José María Álvarez-Pallete, President and CEO of Telefónica, Carmen Morenés, Director General of Fundación Telefónica, Diego del Alcázar, CEO of IE University, María Benjumea, founder and CEO of South Summit, and Xavier Bertolín, Corporate Director of Education and Marketing for Fundación “La Caixa”. During his closing speech, José María Álvarez-Pallete, the president and CEO of Telefónica, stated that: “The proposal we make at Telefónica is that we use technology to hack technology. Part of the solution lies in using platforms and customizing education through artificial intelligence, and learning to use technology for a purpose, which is not to leave anyone behind.”

Much like in previous editions, enlightED had the participation of renowned domestic and international speakers, including Toju Duke, founder of Diverse AI, a speaker, author and advisor on responsible AI and Daniel Susskind, professor of Economics at King’s College London and associate researcher at the Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence at Oxford University. Also featured were Carl-Benedikt Frey, Dieter Schwarz associate professor of Artificial Intelligence and Work at the Oxford Internet Institute and fellow of Mansfield College at Oxford University, Edo Segal, entrepreneur, inventor, private investor and founder and CEO of bMuse, and Priya Lakhani, founder and CEO of Century Tech. 

The 2,500 attendees at enlightED were able to enjoy these speakers for free, and their talks were streamed live on the event’s website. The programme also featured over 30 debates, workshops and case studies to experiment with the uses and applications of AI in learning models. Other topics included public education policies, skills-related policies for AI and cybersecurity and the basic tools of AI for the next digital generation.
