We have opened 'Rethinking Tomorrow' by meeting with two of the most acclaimed sociologists in the world. Saskia Sassen, recipient of the Prince of Asturias Award for Social Sciences 2013, and Richard Sennett, professor of Sociology at MIT and Humanities at the University of New York, receive us at their home in London to provide us with a vision of the situation we are experiencing and how the so-called post-covid-19 era will affect us in the future. Although their intellectual lines may defer, their field of thought does coincide: cities. Whereas Sassen, who coined the term 'global city' focuses her latest essays on how finances influence large cities, Sennet proposes that the challenge of the cities is the relationship with the other, with what it does not know, in what he defines as the 'open city'. In this discussion, both reflect on the future of the cities after Covid-19: technology, social media, capitalism and, of course, the Trump administration and the responses of the world's leader to Covid-19.
