With an investment of over 320 million soles, Fundación Telefónica has benefited thousands of children, teenagers, teachers and families, driving the development of Peruvian society through education, especially the more disadvantaged communities.

To commemorate our 20 years of social, educational and cultural action in Peru, we published a book entitled 20 Years of Fundación Telefónica in Peru, a record of the programmes that have had such a positive impact on society in terms of improving the quality of education, the dissemination of Peruvian art and culture, facilitating the integration of people with disabilities, preventing and eradicating child labour, promoting sport in school and developing a network of corporate volunteers to support the most disadvantaged members of society.

The book chronicles the institutional side of Fundación Telefónica since its creation as the Telefónica Trust “Telecommunications and Progress”, which was founded in 1995 and later became Telefónica’s representative body in Peru for matters concerning culture, education and social support, as well as disseminating the importance of telecommunications for the country’s progress. Fundación Telefónica del Perú adopted this name in 1999, starting its interventions with programmes to improve educational quality through the use of technology in educational processes, adapting to the needs identified in the country and the challenges of the 21st century.

Fundación Telefónica has worked tirelessly with social institutions and the public administration, investing more than 320 million soles in implementing its social, educational and cultural programmes. This has led to the development of important educational projects such as the Educared portal and the Fundación Telefónica Classrooms. The Classrooms project, in particular, was designed to support teachers, students and families in the process of training them in the use of innovative educational tools and content as well as fostering and improving education in public schools and hospitals.

Between 2004 and 2015 we have been working actively to eradicate child labour, offering the chance of an education to children and teenagers in high-risk situations and thus providing them with genuine opportunities for development.
Between 2000 and 2006, Fundación Telefónica undertook an exhaustive project to develop social and educational programmes that were committed to improving the quality of life of people with different skills in order to achieve their full integration into society.

In the cultural sphere, we promote the wealth of Peruvian culture by means of recovering and disseminating Peruvian artists from the past and present. We have undertaken in-depth research projects, exhibitions and publications on art in Peru in the 20th century. We also restored the Cathedral complex in the city of Cusco, which took five years and entailed an investment of 1.2 million dollars.

In 2005 we took a great step forward with the opening of our cultural facility, the Fundación Telefónica Space, which has been visited by around 350,000 people to enjoy the latest trends in art, technology and thinking related to digital culture.
Moreover, the work of Fundación Telefónica has also focused on supporting its partners through the Volunteer programme, who have done a tremendous job through solidarity campaigns and social projects in various parts of the country.

“This book reflects the important educational, cultural and social projects that have benefited children, teenagers, teachers and families in Peru. Apart from providing a record of our actions, the book also gives recognition to all the people who have taken part in or benefited from our programmes over the last 20 years. This book reflects our commitment to Peru and I can categorically state that our determination to help build a better country is as strong as it was on the first day,” said Elizabeth Galdo Marín, the director of Fundación Telefónica in Peru.
