This global event will bring together more than 8,400 teams to solve the real challenges posed by NASA's scientific and engineering team.
The free programming campuses 42 Malaga, 42 Urduliz (Bizkaia) and 42 Barcelona will host the world’s largest STEAM hackathon, the Space Apps Challenge organised by NASA, on 5th and 6th of October.
In its 13th edition, this global meeting organised under the slogan The sun touches everything will be held simultaneously in seven spanish cities, one more than in 2023 with the incorporation of Gijón, which together with Barcelona, Madrid, Urduliz (Bizkaia), León, Málaga and Sevilla will become the headquarters of the great global meeting.
Fundación Telefónica, committed to promoting STEAM talent, joins this global call for the second consecutive year by offering three of the 42 programming campuses as venues to host the event.
The 42 campuses in Urduliz (Bizkaia), Barcelona and Malaga, which Fundación Telefónica promotes with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Barcelona City Council, through Barcelona Activa and the Government of Catalonia; and Malaga City Council, the Andalusian Regional Government with the collaboration of the Malaga Provincial Council, respectively; will be the setting for one of the biggest events on the international scene related to programming and technology.
Its facilities will host participants to, in teams, use software development, engineering, art, storytelling, science and other skills to solve science-related challenges written by NASA staff.

Weekend of challenges, space and lots of technology
Under the theme The sun touches everything, participants in the world’s largest hackathon will learn about the challenges on the launch day. Teams will create mobile applications, software, hardware, data visualisations and platform solutions to challenges designed directly by NASA to contribute to space exploration missions and help improve life on Earth.
The different challenges, aimed at people with different skills and abilities of all ages and educational backgrounds, will range from software development to data science to content creation to story invention. Software development, engineering, art, storytelling, science and other skills will be applied by participants to solve proposed challenges.
The 2024 edition is expected to continue to break records at national level. In 2023, Spain registered the highest number of entries in Europe, with more than 900 participants. Some of the teams that participated in 42 Malaga and 42 Urduliz, ‘Ecoflush’ and ‘Time Rocket’ obtained honourable mentions for their projects and, in the case of 42 Barcelona, one of the teams, ‘Space Galatic Coders’ reached the international final phase, in addition to the honourable mention.
Those who, as on previous occasions, win this global event will have the opportunity to travel to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral (USA) to present their ideas to NASA experts.
