Fundación Telefónica Movistar inaugurates the exhibition Fake News: The value of information. An exhibition that calls to understand the complexity of this phenomenon with the objective of identifying different types of disinformation, learning to recognize them, combating their dissemination and contributing to media literacy.
From antiquity to the present, the exhibition covers false news from different periods and explores their forms of propagation and viralization, for which Internet, social networks and the recent emergence of artificial intelligence play a decisive role. At the end of the tour, it culminates with a decalogue that guides and directs in the fight against disinformation, one of the main challenges of this 21st century, as defined by the World Economic Forum and the latest Reporters Without Borders report from 2023.
The exhibition promotes criticism and fact-checking of information sources, being part of Telefónica’s commitment to generate awareness about the responsible use of technology and reaffirming the construction of digital citizenship.
In the midst of the digital era, there is more information than ever and this, in turn, is generated at an unprecedented speed: in the world, 6,000 tweets, 740,000 WhatsApp messages and 694 Instagram posts are published every second; a massive dissemination capacity that represented a radical shift with respect to the way the public accesses, consumes and spreads news. To a large extent, this change is based on the interest of social networks in building communities, called echo chambers, which respond to digital bubbles in which the members themselves share information that supports their points of view and which are fertile ground for the expansion of fake news.
Reinforced by algorithms that go according to each user’s interests, this form of information circulation leads to the polarization of thought and paves the way for the proliferation of false news. The new exhibition by Fundación Telefónica Movistar seeks for visitors to be able to obtain information about what fake news really is, how they have spread throughout history and how they can be detected and combated.
“At Fundación Telefónica Movistar, we understand the importance of educating and raising awareness about the dangers of disinformation based on the growth of digital platforms. This exhibition not only explores the history and impact of fake news, but also offers practical tools so that visitors can discern and combat disinformation in their daily lives”, expressed Agustina Catone, director of Fundación Telefónica Movistar in Argentina.
The exhibition was exhibited during 2023 at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Madrid, where it had great interest from the public. In Buenos Aires it can be visited with free admission from Monday to Friday from 2 to 6 PM and Saturdays from 2 to 7 PM at the foundation’s headquarters at Arenales 1540, CABA. Additionally, there will be guided tours for the general public on Saturdays at 3:30 PM and 5 PM and for educational institutions from Monday to Friday at 9, 10:30 AM and 2 PM.
