Proniño is the largest initiative carried out by a private company to contribute to the eradication of child labour, which breaches the rights of children and adolescents in Latin America.
Since 1998, the program advocates networking through the articulation of public policies, the private sector and the third sector; strengthening institutions and providing the required tools to systematize and disseminate good practices and collaborative knowledge. Proniño has positioned itself in line with the regional targets of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and has firmly sponsored the implementation of the roadmap. Both initiatives seek to eradicate the worst forms of child labour before 2015 and 2016, respectively.
We, at Fundación Telefónica, believe that a quality, sustained and sustainable education is an effective strategy for reducing child labour rates in Latin America. For this reason, our commitment is to ensure:
- The end of child labour by protecting children and adolescents, confirming their retention in school, meeting basic needs, encouraging the alternative use of spare time and transforming cultural patterns, as well as generating adequate conditions in their environment so that the disappearance is sustainable.
- Opportunities to develop a life project. For such purpose, quality education is stressed, promoting innovation and inclusive work at schools by granting access to new technologies, and promoting their implementation as well as networking by the stakeholders involved.
- The development of agents to enable the eradication of child labour to become effective in the long term, as well as the promotion of public policies to ensure the fight against child labour at the national and local levels.
- Managerial transparency based on the application of tools of business rigor in the field of social investment.
