TELOS was first published in 1985 as a platform for research and reflection in the entire area of social communication. It was edited by Fundesco (Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Función Social de las Comunicaciones) [Foundation for the Development of the Social Function of Communications] until 1997, a pioneer entity in Spain in the study of Digital Communication. Its pages are aimed at the study of the social, cultural and communicative consequences of technological innovation. In 2002, it began its second phase, edited by Fundación Telefónica. The magazine began to make an effort to adapt to the transformation that had occurred in the new technologies and the new information and communication networks.
Since January 2008, TELOS has undergone a new phase of relaunch, opening and renewal, marked by a new design, new objectives and topics associated with the Digital Communication Technologies and their impact on society.
TELOS was radically transformed in 2017. The magazine acquired a new identity to adapt to the times we are living in. It definitively ventures into the digital society, with a new design on paper and online, aspiring to become a node of open knowledge on the Internet. It is open to new audiences, new topics and new uncertainties in a world in permanent and accelerated evolution.
The commitment to current affairs and the willingness to anticipate these are in the origins of the new phase that we are beginning. Our objective is to maintain the academic robustness of the magazine, the rigor of its analyses, expanding its approach to include cutting edge research, the social conflicts and the new manifestations of the culture of the 21st century.
We are bearing witness to a process of intense changes and acceleration never before seen in the history of humanity.
The Information and Knowledge Society, characterized by the domination of the Information and Communication Technologies, the focal point of development being the last stretch of the 20th century, is combined with substantial advance in the processing capacity and the deployment of ultra-fast broadband infrastructures. There is a convergence of technological progress in areas such as robotics or artificial intelligence and in the scientific advances in fields such as biotechnology, the study of the brain and nanotechnology. This confluence paints a scenario of technoscientific singularity of exponential development that will alter all the areas of our lives.
TELOS aspires to be a Latin-American leader in the analysis of the changes and in the prospects of what is yet to come in an interconnected and global society. The old maps are no longer of use and open, participative and collaborative knowledge is necessary to develop a new culture in a world that is passionately observant.
This number reflects on the need for a new global digital compact that defines criteria for the development and implementation of technologies in pursuit of social welfare and equity.
