Living in a Sea of Data 2016

Fecha: April 7 and May 19

Lugar: Espacio Fundación Telefónica. Madrid. Spain

We launch in Spain the fourth edition of Living in a Sea of Data, the lecture series in which Fundación Telefónica gives voice to knowledge about the fascinating world of ‘Data.’ In the last three years, fifty-three top-level speakers have participated to share their experiences in the areas of Big Data, data science, the Internet of Things and robotics.

In 2016, the Sea of Data conversation centres on the rise of artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0 and young entrepreneurs. We will cover this over two sessions, the first on 7 April and the second on 19 May.

Day 1 – Humans and machines: a future with artificial intelligence

Almost without realising, artificial intelligence has inveigled itself in our everyday lives. Personal assistants such as Siri and Cortana have become regular tools, sometimes even essential ones. Similarly, image recognition systems are rivalling human faculties. We’re witnessing how the predictive capabilities of machine learning are becoming ubiquitous and accessible to every citizen. We’re also seeing that some algorithms are capable of taking the reins of business decisions, a good example of which is the PreSeries project set in motion by Open Future_ de Telefónica, an automated platform that is able to predict the likelihood of a start-up being successful in its earliest phase.

We will discuss these and other topics in the 7 April session which will be opened by Ramón López de Mántaras, director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Unit at the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council).

Day 2 – Industry 4.0 and new Spanish start-ups

A new technological concept is becoming firmly established in the economic sphere – Industry 4.0, a term used to encompass a wide variety of technologies that are transforming factories, creating new means of production and generating new and unprecedented products, encompassing technologies such as the Internet of Things, machine learning, robotics and 3D printing.

This will be the theme for the second ‘Sea of Data’ seminar on 19 May. The session will be in two parts: the first dedicated to analysing this new concept of Industry 4.0 and the second to young entrepreneurs. We will learn about the work of some new Spanish start-ups which operate in the field of disruptive technologies.
