On 20 and 21 November, the first Educational Innovation Show was held in Punta Arenas to showcase to the local community the experiences of students and teachers in the Magallanes region on the training courses organized during the past year by Fundación Telefónica.

The objective of the Foundation’s action in Punta Arenas since 2012 has been to transfer knowledge of educational innovation to schools, with an emphasis on integrating technologies in classrooms and developing key 21st century skills such as creativity, critical thought, problem-solving, leadership, responsibility, media literacy and ICT skills (Information and Communication Technologies).

This year, in particular, a series of workshops on automated education for students and teachers were held whose output and results were exhibited at the Show.

The design of the workshops took into consideration important local conditions, such as the region’s climate, proposing solutions such as growing technologies to improve household production or setting up greenhouses to enhance performance, devices designed and manufactured by the Telefónica Foundation.

The idea of the skills training for teachers was to give them the knowledge and resources to help them develop their own projects and replicate them with the students in the classroom. Some of the teachers taking part in the project were also offered support by experts to encourage the continuity of the projects.

With the support of these technology experts, the teachers were thus able to successfully develop physical prototypes based on their initial ideas such as robotic arms, a virtual plant, a mini-greenhouse and a terrarium, amongst others.
At the show there were six stands displaying the different prototypes created by the students and teachers, including:

Villa Las Nieves school: Robotic Arm, Terrarium, Audiovisual Greenhouse Records.
España school: Virtual Plant and Mini Greenhouse
Pedro Pablo Lemaitre school: “Fruit acidity expressed in musical notes” project
Industrial College stand: Smart Systems Project, FTX Explorer Vehicle
Teaching Projects stand: Smart Systems Project (Armando Quesada Acharán Industrial College), Pest Controls (Alemán School), “Hernandito” robotic vehicle (Hernando de Magallanes school), amongst others.
